Last year, we defined Goodness, Truth and Beauty and this leads us to the final portion of our pursuit. What is Faith?
The dictionary tells us that faith is: the complete trust or confidence in someone or something. It is also defined as strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof.
We looked at many different people's interpretation of faith. This one struck a cord with us.
We also looked at other quotes that we definitely did not agree on!
And this one that we discussed at length:
We agreed that discussion is always healthy and desired but that ultimately Truth is Truth and no amount of conversation can change that.
We looked carefully at what the Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us is Faith:
The Characteristics of Faith
- Faith is a grace
- Faith is a human act
- Faith is certain
- "Faith seeks understanding“
- Though faith is above reason, there can never be any real discrepancy between faith and reason
- Faith is an act of freedom
- Faith is necessary
- Faith is a free gift from God
We examined "Belief" to see how it differs from Faith. One quote we all seemed to agree with:
After studying the structure of our Catechism, we discovered FOUR PILLARS. The first is the Profession of Faith - what we believe. We looked at both creeds that we tend to recite during Mass. Some of us were able to recite the Apostles' Creed from memory but all agreed to we need to work harder to memorize the Nicene Creed!!
The first part of our CREED is our belief in God as CREATOR. We talked about what it means to be a creator and what is considered a creation.
We looked at different perspectives of Creation. We read the poem The Creation by James Weldon Johnson and followed by sharing our own poems about creation. You can read all our poems in the WRITINGS tab.
We also looked at Michelangelo's interpretation of Creation from the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. We had read the creation story from Genesis and compared what we saw with what we read.
We also compared Johnson's description of GOD with Michelangelo's painting and found some differences.
We briefly began a discussion on the novel we are currently reading, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and talked about Victor's role as creator.
Lastly, we discussed the creation of the movie City Lights by Charlie Chaplin and the choices he made with regard to the use of sound and dialogue.
